We will do a few very pointed reading assignments. The first is this article by critic and amateur programmer Matthew Fuller (formerly of I/O/D and now at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam.) This article outlines a critical approach towards software that I would like this class to foster. In using the work of artist and architect Gordon Matta-Clark, Fuller is able to articulate a resistant practice of software use, misuse and re-tooling -- picking apart at the inevitable seams and cracks in (seemingly) monolithic commercial software packages.
